Zero Install is a package manager that allows the publishing and maintenance of new software directly from user sites without the need for external storage or cloud services.
Zero Install allows the launch of programs from created packages and has versions for Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X and Windows. The Zero Install code is written in Python and the program is distributed with an LGPL license.
The purpose of Zero Install is not to replace installers and file storage, but to supplement them.
The program does not use its own package format, but manipulates ordinary tar.gz or zip archives combined with metadata in XML format. Zero Install supports the installation of multiple versions of the same program, allows sharing of the same libraries, and suspicious applications can run in a chroot environment.
